Surgery during the IDES process?

This is a rather long question post for the group and my spidey senses are tingling that I’ll get screwed.

Quick backstory: Currently 15 yrs AD Army and our BN borrowed PCM initiated my MEB. 11 yrs ago, my bilateral FAI hip problems started and have had both scoped already. 8 months ago, my left hip was totally replaced by. Civilian Dr. Physical therapy continues, reducing pain and increasing ROM. However, my recovery is slower than average.

My PEBLO says, “The MEB office won’t defer for an already scheduled upcoming right hip replacement off base. Even with your surgery being 3 months out while your Dr. is out of the country.” Now, the only possible way I’ll get surgery is to completed the C & P exams. Once in the PEB phase, then the MEB Office OIC will have to sign off for surgery during the process. After returning from convalescent leave, then I’ll be able to “Appeal signing my final ratings and submit new medical records”.

Just got assigned an MSC, he also seemed confused, as to why initiate now (I did just hit the magical 250 days on profile) I know the Army does odd processes…sometimes.

Has this happens to anyones else? Whats the probability that the MEB Office OIC will authorize my hip surgery, after starting the MEB?
It kinda feels like they’re going to say something like, “Eh, why change course now? We’ve already assigned the peoples, let’s just Charley-Mike and make it harder on the SM to have to go through the VA for surgery”’.

Always trust your gut "AKA Spidey Sense" ! highly doubt they will authorize the surgery. They are trying to kick you out because they think your conditions cause you to not do your job. Since you just started the IDES process you have a lot more sway than you think if you know how the system works. I HIGHLY recommend reaching out to a private attorney for a free consultation. They are not cheap but the results of this process are life changing! My wife hired one and fought through the entire thing. She obtained better results than she could have ever hoped for!!!

I just told them the day prior or so, in order to not give them time to object. It was stressful, but I have no regrets. You have given so many years, time to look out for you.

Life, limb or vision is about the only reason(s) they'll permit surgery during the IDES process. Granted, there ARE exceptions and certainly a Congressional wouldn't hurt ::wink wink nudge nudge:: Surgery can be authorized once the MEB is submitted, but that's about the only time I've seen it done during the process. Of course, your mileage may vary, but like I said, there's exceptions to everything.

Honestly? Just don't tell them.... I need an 8th ankle surgery (full ankle fusion) and my stuff is with the VA awaiting my rating. That ain't stopping me from taking care of my stuff and body.

Feel free to do what you're gonna do, but don't give that advice to anyone else. Surgery without authorization while in the DES process is grounds for rejection/cancellation of your entire DES package. Seen it happen.

Think about it for a little bit: if you're on active duty, they're going to know, big time. If you are reserve component, unless you use your own insurance and not Tricare, they're going to know - they can easily pull that info. As a former PEBLO I have had people try that route and end up getting chaptered out instead of completing through IDES, do you really want to risk your future healthcare/retirement just because you wanted it done now? Preservation of life/limb/vision or quality of life are exceptions, the latter has to be argued for, but you have a chance nonetheless. I agree with @PERS-95 100%

do u know any information on how those special few individuals were able to get their surgery approved after completing meb
