TDRL to PDRL

Hello,

I have a quick question. I am currently on TDRL. I am 100% through the VA and 80% through DoD. I have a disability that puts me at 30%, so I’ll eventually be PDRL anyway, but due to my mental health, they placed me on TDRL. I’m in the final stages and awaiting my re eval coming in the next few months. I was wondering, since my disability is through the VA, what does this mean for my benefits if they should lower my DoD rating? Will it affect my VA rating at all, or how does this work? I’m really confused.

Since you did not say you were over 20 years, I am going to answer under the assumption that you are less than 20 years. In that case, your VA payment will be higher than your DOD payment, so the amount of money won't change just because your DOD percentage lowers. The only concern would be if your percentage were to go less than 30%, which you seem fairly confident will not happen. So, unless I am missing a detail here, the answer is basically nothing changes.

All that being said, if you do not go to your reevaluation appointment, or for whatever reason you get to 36 months without being reevaluated by the physical evaluation board, you will completely come off of tdrl, lose it all together and have zero DOD benefits.

Not everyone who medically retired under 20 has all of their retirement pay waived by VA disability. I am 100% and still receive over a thousand a month in mil retirement. It depends on pay grade, years of service, and DOD retirement %.

Woukd you give us some details

Woukd you give us some details
Example of residual retired pay.

Factors:
VA compensation = 2000
DoD retired pay = 3100
DoD pay is reduced dollar for dollar in amount of VA comp; 3100 minus 2000 = 1100 residual retired pay
The retiree ends up with 2000 VA comp and 1100 residual retired pay = 3100

Use the term “residual” as a search item and many cases will be featured. SEARCH is located at upper right of forum page.
