Unfit by IPEB?

Hello all,

I'm active duty Air Force (RegAF). My MEB package was sent to AFPC a week ago. I haven't received a notification of fit or unfit yet. However, a VA Rating representative contacted me recently asking for clarification on one of my claimed conditions (not the condition making me unfit for service). The rater said they are working on the rest of my claimed conditions.

Does this mean the IPEB found me unfit for continued service?
From my understanding when the IPEB determines a service member is unfit, they request ratings for the unfitting condition. Then the VA will develop proposed ratings for all claimed conditions. Once that is complete, the IPEB will send their determination with proposed ratings to my PEBLO who will notify me.

Yes. Almost everyone that gets into IDES is found unfit. Its rare to be found fit for duty by the time you get into this process.

That's what I was thinking. I just hope I'm not one of those rare cases to be found fit and returned to duty with restrictions. My therapist and commander have said do not retain. I'll be glad when this process is over with.

No, this has nothing to do with your PEB findings. Getting your proposed VA ratings is a part of the IDES process. If the PEB finds you unfit, they will use the VA ratings to determine your DoD disability rating. Essentially, they should just take the proposed VA rating for whatever your disqualifying condition(s) is(are) and that will be your DoD rating. It sounds like the VA is just finishing up your proposed ratings so they can be sent to the PEB before they make their fit/unfit decision.

I don't know how long the AF PEB process takes, but I'm Navy and my MEB package was sent up to the PEB on June 2nd. Our PEB is saying it's a 4-6 month wait for results.

I received IPEB results from PEBLO yesterday. I was found unfit and received proposed ratings for DoD and VA. Air Force IPEB is much quicker than 4-6 months.

If you don’t mind me asking, what was your unfit condition?

What was your treatment path? Like when did you start talking to somebody, what treatments did you try, and how long was the time between diagnosis and being referred to IDES?
I've been diagnosed for the past decade. Just got worse the past year. I've actively received mental health treatment for the past year. Referred to IDES in May 2021.

How do you get them to give you your ratings? I tried, but the second I verified my identity, they immediately said they couldn't release ratings and to ask my PEBLO.

If you're referring to the VA, I was told the same thing.

When I saw an additional entry on my claim that said closed on va.gov, I called the VA for details. They told me I had proposed ratings and that my case was waiting for final review on ratings.

Kind of hit or miss when calling VA because some customer agents seem knowledgeable providing details and others seem clueless and just say your claim is being processed.

Logged on to myPers and chatted with a customer service representative asking for IPEB status update. I gave them the incident# from the auto generated email AFPC sends you stating the IPEB received MEB package from PEBLO.

AFPC customer representative said they would elevate my question to the disability branch. An hour and a half later, I received email from AFPC stating AF Form 356 with IPEB results was sent to my PEBLO.

I would encourage you to continue to be proactive by contacting your PEBLO on a regular basis and check va.gov for updates on your claim.

Also, conduct a lot of research using Google, this website, and Reddit.

I called the VA hotline and told them that va.gov said I had been sent a decision letter but I never received it. I asked if he could tell me what my ratings were and once he dug into it and saw that it was a proposed rating he told me he wasn't allowed to discuss it...but that he could email me that decision letter. I gave him my email address and a minute later I had my proposed rating letter as well as a narrative summary that broke down each condition including what symptoms would them them to the next higher level.

Any update on your orders/ out processing & leave? Still confused as to how that works, I hear you can’t even outprocess until you get your orders.

Not yet. I didn't accept the IPEB results until yesterday. That's when I signed paperwork accepting the results. PEBLO said yesterday she will send paperwork to AFPC so they can finalize my case. Orders could take a few weeks. Then I can out-process and take terminal leave.

If they find you fit they have to return you to duty with no restrictions is what I’ve been told that’s not there job the only thing the peb can say is fit or unfit that’s it

What about if your case was sent to the PEB before you got your VA ratings. My case was sent to the VA the 20th of August and sent to the PEB last week. I still don’t have my VA ratings. How can they match ratings that I don’t have?

They'll make a fit/unfit determination and then just hold your case until they get ratings from VA. Once your ratings come in, they'll apply them and send the full decision and paperwork to your PEBLO.

Got you. I keep hearing so many different things but this sounds like what people usually say.

I was just found unfit also. Guard. 100 va. But in the reason they blamed my mental health condition on my civ LE occupation. Even though I have a LOD for it from military. I just hit 20 years too. Nothing they do makes any sense to me
