VRE while AD

Good afternoon,

I am currently pretty far into the MEB process (VA has already sent everything back from the AF and im just waiting on AFPC). I received a phone call from a VR&E counselor around October and submitted an application into the program shortly after. The counselor pitched that VR&E was an employment track that I could use while I am still AD and going through the IDES process. In November I received a letter in the mail from the VA stating that I had a been approved and had a video conference with my counselor earlier this week. She went ahead and had me apply to college (which starts in January) and also had me start filling out a few more pieces of paperwork. I went to my commander and notified him that I had been approved and that I was applying to a college (we had a previous conversation months ago and he was very okay with me doing this). His concern now is how does the Air Force approve me to go to school while still on active duty even though this is technically an employment program. Has anyone gone through this while on active duty and if so how did you overcome this? I have been told and seen on multiple reddit posts that VR&E is for Veterans only, and I have expressed to my counselor that I am still waiting for a separation date and all, but she says I am still approved and good to start college while active and that I just will be unable to receive the stipend (BAH) while i'm still active. Any advice or help would be greatly apricated!
