When will I receive my severance pay

Well DFAS has received my orders as of 6 February but no severence yet. Not even been processed. How much longer?
I have spoken with them today and they said that it's only been 45 days seen they have received my orders and that it could take 90 days to be processed. Sorry brother but it looks like we will have to wait a little longer.

Wow seems like things are not going well for DFAS huh? When I spoke with Finance back in Dec before I went on Terminal in Jan, they told all of us that it would take 3 weeks from when we separated (March 2nd) to get our severance check. When I asked for clarification as to the severance check and our final paycheck, I got a stern answer of “I just told you it would take 3 weeks.” I didn’t push any further. Fortunately for me, I’m just a straight medboard with a combat related injury so even though I wasn’t supposed to be taxed, they told me I’m still getting taxed 22% . In any case, we are creeping up on 3 weeks now and I want to hold out hope, but you guys have me scared to be honest lol.

I think your situation is a bit different than ours. For what you stating You were not on tdrl and must people who are supposed to get desability severance pay after being med boarded out, get it in 2 to 4 weeks. You should see yours soon! The problem is for everyone else getting removed from temporary retirement list(TDRL).

Ah ok. Yeah, I was a little hesistant to post because I know my situation is a lot simpler than for you guys. Appreciate the help!

You said the your severance will get taxed 22% but are you getting that money back? The reason I am asking is because my is combat related as well and I was under the impression that it wouldn't get taxed and if it did that I was going to be able to claim it back.

Hooo boy, I’m almost cussed the lady out in Finance. Basically, yes, because we have combat related injuries, our severance is tax free. However, due to the limitations of the DFAS system, they somehow cannot tell the system to leave the money alone in the audit. So, she told me they will tax my pay 22% and then when I get my final paycheck, I have to send in a letter requesting for the money back with DD-214, Orders, the whole nine yards. It’s pretty BS in my opinion.

From the Army:

  • Due to limits of the current Defense Finance and Accounting (DFAS) pay system, taxes will be withheld on active duty cases separating with severance pay. Procedures exist for the local servicing finance office to coordinate with DFAS-Indianapolis for refund of the taxes withheld. The request and required documentation must be received at DFAS by 31 December of the year in which the severance payment was received. In the alternative, the Soldier may seek a refund when filing their tax return. For more information on filing with the IRS contact the Servicing Finance Officer or USAPDA.

That's exactly what they told but they say it will take 3 to 4 months to get the taxed money back. One last F... U from the army!

Good news everyone. I called DFAS today and they said it’s looking like they finally closed my account yesterday (03/23/20). They just haven’t sent out the final pay/severance pay yet. She said if I haven’t gotten my money by April 1st, to call back to see if they released the funds. :)

Congratulations! I called today and the lady said they have not done anything with my orders yet. It has been 60 days. She sent an email to processing department to see why they have not done eanything with my orders and told my to call back in 14 working days... I am still showing up in their system as retired!!.. congratulations brother

Hey brother have you heard anything from DFAS about your severance? I am still waiting for my and with all this stuff about coronavirus I really need that money.

I agree that the wait time is unacceptable.

The DFAS is not part of the Army. It is a DoD agency.

Hey brother. I called back on Monday and got the run around again. The woman at DFAS told me that when I called last week, they had just put in the request to release my funds so that if I don’t get paid by April 23rd, I should call them back so they can get in contact with the Ombudsman to release my money. She said in the mean time, to call my base’s Finance office and tell them to release my money. Only problem is that I’ve been calling the 3 phone numbers she provided me for two days straight and nobody is answering their phone. I don’t know if it’s because they are civilians so they don’t have to come to work or what, but this is beyond ridiculous and I’m close to going off. I have bills and things stacking up with the Coronavirus and I’m depending on this severance pay. Sorry for ranting. All I can do now is call every day and pray someone answers their phone.

I spoke to DFAS this morning as it has been 56 days since they received my orders. They said they do not see any movement from receipt of my orders and said it could be another 30-60 days. Ugghhhhh

It is dispicable how Soldiers are treated during TDRL removal

I just summited a complaint with my congressman. I am sure if it'll do anything but at this point I have nothing to lose.

Hey brother I just got my money tax free. I requested a congressional inquiry. I spoke to my representative secretary las week and sent the inquiry last week Monday and I woke up this morning and the money was in my account tax free. I spoke to dfas last week and they hadn't even touched my orders yet.
