TIME LINE HELP!!! [severance pay & taxes]

That was around May 20th and with the memorial holiday, they told me to call back on the 3rd of June. When I called on the 3rd, they told me that it went under review on May 22nd. Any update on your end?

Not yet they told me to wait until the 19th to call back. I'm on the fence, I don't know if I should annoy them or just let it run its course.

Honestly probably best to let it run its course. They aren't really helpful and don't seem to know anything. lol. No updated RAS but I've been checking.

Ok so they asked me to call back today last week so I did. Still, no movement but the associate I spoke with sent an escalation to the supervisor and asked me to call back next week so we shall see.

DFAS Cleveland called. Funds were released today and I should expect to see the deposit by next week at the latest. She called as a courtesy since she knows I've been waiting a while. Hope you all hear back soon with good news. RAS didn't update yet.

No way!!! Thats awesome! I havent heard anything yet. I may try and give them a call later this month. Ive kinda just decided to take a hands off approach and let it take its natural course.

Severance hit today. They weren't suppose to tax it but did so I sent in a request for a refund. That'll take a few weeks I'm sure but the rest is finally here. Lol

Congratulations...

Please continue to post updates regarding the tax situation. Those updates will be helpful to other veterans.

Regards,
Ron

I'll definitely update. My severance is non-taxable due to receiving VA compensation for the same condition I was separated for. My orders stated that if I submitted my VA award letter, it would avoid them taxing it. I provided the VA award letter but the severance was still taxed. I submitted my VA Award letter in full, separation orders, DD-214, a letter requesting a refund of taxes and MEB Findings (199). It may be over kill but they'll have everything they need. I'll update once refund has been received. Good luck everyone!

I've never seen an application, claim, or appeal denied due to too much documentation. I would have done the same.

Good luck,
Ron

I just spoke with DFAS today. The lady on the phone said she could see someone working on it last friday. And it was in an audit and they had to send it back to review. Now they are telling me we are in the last stages of this thing.

I get what you mean, I called this morning and the lady said “oh it went to processing and someone called you Friday and left a message” I checked my messages and nothing. Called back and another lady said “oh we seen you escalated it on the 8th. Well have my lead send and email to the supervisor team over there and should get an answer by Friday” nothing about the call that I was supposed to have gotten. Mind you I been in review since end of March!

Well all I know to tell you is they sent that escalation last month for me and they told me it took a month. Im learning the more you just leave it alone the smoother it will go with less fingers in it.

Re: "Im learning the more you just leave it alone the smoother it will go with less fingers in it. "

I agree.

However, it is understandable a retiree or other veteran wants to know when they will be paid.

Conversely, when I was in charge of an Army Travel Section in '77'-'78 (processing travel claims) one FTE (full time equivalent) (i.e., 8 hours) was lost each day to researching the status of unpaid claims, many of which we had yet to receive from distant units. In the case of DFAS, I doubt the representatives answering the phone are involved in the actual processing of claims.

Good luck,
Ron

Did you ever receive your severance?

I did, I received it on Jun 21. I am in the process of submitting a claim to get my taxes back because I have already had a VA rating/compensation from 2017. Was wondering if anyone knew the correct fax number? I submitted an online request and they told me I needed to contact DFAS Cleveland (bc they deal with Marines) and left me in the dust.

I thought that I am able to request the taxes from DFAS since I just received my severance last month? It’s within the same year. I just need the correct fax number to fax the documents to DFAS.
