Retirement vs severance choice

Currently an O2E with 10 years looking at 20 or 30% dod, 80 VA. My issue is borderline at 20 or 30%, if I get 20% I would get 100k severance. I have a federal GS9 job lined up so I'm not worried about the insurance benifits, would it be better to get the retirement or the severance?

RE: "Choice" in Subject Line

One does not choose between severance pay and retirement.

Assuming a person meets other (disability) requirements:
DOD 30% or more = retirement
DOD less than 30% = severance pay

One major benefit from retirement :
Tricare

If you leave your next career early, you have no insurance from that career.

I have a regular retirement and also rated 100% P&T by the VA. I appreciate being able to use Tricare for Life due to its convenience.

I'm in a similar situation. There are quite a few reasons I want retirement and not severance. Other than the healthcare and other benefits, you have to pay back the severance. Which means you won't see that VA monthly check for quite some time until you pay back the severance amount.
